In the Egyptian dictionary, if you looked up the word "workaholic", you'd see a picture of this guy under it. Really. As the current (in his era, anyway) and youngest-ever leader of the Med-Jai, Egypt's supernatural police force, he has this insane tendency to feel personally responsible for the safety of the entire frickin' world on a daily basis. Of course, since he had to put a nasty, intent-on-global-destruction mummy back into its grave twice, perhaps he's on to something. But really, the pole up his behind has to go. Or at least, that's what everyone who meets and likes the poor guy thinks. He does a good job, but when the job's done and he's supposed to...relax? He's out training warhorses or practicing with his sword. Puh-the-tic. That's what Bast had to say about the situation, anyway.
Though Muslim, Ardeth is also in service to the old Egyptian deities, as the Med-Jai are the remnants of dynastic Egypt's police force and are sworn to uphold Ma'at (basically, "balance" or "justice" though it encompasses a lot more than that). As a result, those ancient deities--who never really went away, even before modern Pagans started calling on them--are very much aware of the Med-Jai and tend to keep an eye on them. At the urging of Bast, who besides being lady of cats is also Goddess of Joy, the gods decided to repay their stiff but dutiful son with something he needs more than he could ever possibly imagine, and would never take for himself.
A vacation.
Of course, they didn't give him any say in the matter....
